Biden's presidency nears end: key contributions to Ukraine and future expectations
The end of Joe Biden's presidential term in two months and his recent important decisions prompt reflection on what he has done for Ukraine
I met with Joe Biden in various settings when he was vice president. After those meetings, I was sure that he cared about Ukraine and was sincerely rooting for it. From the moment we first spoke, it was also clear that Biden was able to make bold decisions. And it is from this perspective that I am now looking at his legacy.
First, under his presidency, the level of U.S. support for Ukraine has become unprecedented, one might say record-breaking.
Secondly, Biden showed himself to be a statesman by withdrawing from the election race. Whether he did it too late or not is a matter for political experts to assess. In my opinion, he acted definitely as a statesman, putting national interests above political ambitions.
The 46th President of the United States has already entered history books, but he still has 60 days to add a few more chapters. The past week has already brought good news that we appreciate, and which at the same time demonstrates a clear understanding of Ukraine's needs by the United States.
In this war of authoritarianism against democracy, Russia is “negotiating” with missiles, demonstrating impunity by killing civilians, and seeking to intimidate and impose acceptance of their agenda.
That is why continued U.S. support is essential to withstand the pressure and maintain allied unity. The menu of possible solutions is well known, and Ukraine has been talking about them for years at all levels: unconditional permission for missile strikes deep into Russian territory with Western weapons, closing the skies over Ukraine, and inviting Ukraine to join NATO.
And as we prepare to make these decisions, we must remember that every day counts for Ukrainians and our defenders!
