Belgian Prime Minister Bart de Wever says his country will provide Kyiv with €1 billion in military aid and will consider participating in a peacekeeping mission
This was announced on April 8 during a joint press conference in Kyiv with President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyy.
“I’m pleased to announce that we’ve made a new decision in the government. Of course, we will continue providing humanitarian aid. We are announcing a €1 billion package for 2025, and every year we will allocate €1 billion for defense matters,” said the politician.
He also expressed interest in establishing Belgian defense production facilities in Ukraine.
De Wever emphasized that Belgium is ready to join a peacekeeping mission in Ukraine if France, the United Kingdom, and Germany decide to deploy their military contingents.
“We are firmly committed. If there is a ceasefire agreed upon by Ukraine, we must support that process. France and the UK will play a leading role. Our planning offices and general staffs are already discussing potential initiatives in the event of a ceasefire,” he stated.
According to him, Belgium has consistently participated in multinational coalitions and peace initiatives.
Earlier on April 8, VRT media reported that Belgian Prime Minister Bart De Wever, along with Foreign Minister Maxime Prévot and Defense Minister Theo Francken, had arrived in Kyiv
During their visit, the Belgian officials are scheduled to hold talks with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy. As noted by Belgian Foreign Minister Prevot, this visit is not just a symbolic gesture.
"This is a mission of solidarity, hope, and unwavering support for the generation of Ukrainians fighting for their freedom and future," Prevot wrote on X.
He also shared a photo from Bucha, which the Belgian delegation visited to honor the victims of Russian aggression. "Today we honor the memory of the victims. We stand with the survivors. And we affirm: Belgium stands side by side with Ukraine. Justice must prevail," emphasized the Belgian Foreign Minister.
