American war documentarian injured after balcony collapses in Kyiv
In the Podilskyi district of Kyiv, a balcony fell on a U.S. citizen who had come to Ukraine to document the war
Tymur Tkachenko, the head of the Kyiv City Military Administration, reported the information.
The incident occurred right in front of the entrance to an apartment building, as a result of which the man was injured.
“This was not an enemy attack, but the result of many years of neglect. I have urgently instructed the newly appointed head of the Podilskyi District State Administration, Volodymyr Nakonechnyi, to stay in contact with the victim, take personal control of the situation regarding this building, and conduct an inspection of all facades for potential hazards,” Tkachenko emphasized.
He added that the victim is receiving the necessary assistance and announced a “serious conversation” with district management companies.
Later, the Kyiv City State Administration reported that specialists from the management company had dismantled the balcony debris and cleaned up the area. The site of the incident is currently cordoned off, and preparations are underway for instrumental inspections to determine further repair work.
It was noted that the victim did not call for medical assistance or the police.
“The building is already over 120 years old—it was built back in 1905. We remind you: employees of management companies do not have access to apartment balconies without the owners’ consent. We urge residents of old buildings: if you notice signs of balcony deterioration, immediately contact the district administration. This is necessary for inspection and making decisions regarding safe operation,” the Kyiv City State Administration added.
- In April 2024, the facade of a balcony collapsed in the historic center of Lviv.
