Alignment on unconditional ceasefire — Zelenskyy meets Meloni and von der Leyen in Rome
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy met with Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni and European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen on Saturday, April 26, in Rome, after the Pope's funeral
He wrote about this on his Telegram channel.
According to Zelenskyy, during his meeting with Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, they discussed important issues regarding security guarantees for Ukraine and joint efforts aimed at restoring peace and protecting the lives of Ukrainians.
"Forty-six days ago, Ukraine agreed to a complete, unconditional ceasefire, and for 46 days Russia has continued killing our people. Therefore, special attention was given to the importance of exerting pressure on Russia. I value Giorgia Meloni’s clear and principled stance," Zelenskyy noted.
The Ukrainian President also informed his Italian counterpart about the results of recent meetings of the Ukrainian delegation with representatives of the United States, France, the United Kingdom, and Germany, which took place in Paris and London.
"There is a shared position: an unconditional ceasefire must be the first step toward sustainable peace in Ukraine," he added.
Meeting with von der Leyen
Zelenskyy described his meeting with European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen as positive.
According to him, the main topics of the conversation were steps aimed at protecting the lives of Ukrainians, restoring security, and moving toward an unconditional ceasefire.
"We discussed strengthening cooperation between Ukraine and the EU, particularly through the ReArm Europe initiative. Special attention was given to the preparation of the EU’s 17th sanctions package. It is important that it targets key sectors of the Russian economy and becomes one of the elements of pressure on Russia to restore peace," the president stated.
