"After minerals deal, Ukraine sees positive shifts from Trump": political scientist
Oleksiy Haran, professor of political science at the National University of Kyiv-Mohyla Academy, noted that the agreement with Ukraine on fossil fuels is important for Trump
He shared this opinion during a broadcast on Espreso.
"He (Trump) was angry with us for a while, stopped the weapons supplies that were approved under Biden, and Republicans also voted for it in Congress. And the intelligence data exchange. So this was a very difficult period for us.
Now, we literally saw, the same day and the next, this atmosphere change, and they already said, ‘Yes, we are giving you 50 million in aid.’ Now the equipment and documentation for the F-16 training center worth 310 million have appeared. By the way, Patriot, from Israel. I don’t think they would have supplied it to us without U.S. approval. And now there is news that a document on extending sanctions has been prepared. Whether it will be adopted depends on Trump. So we immediately saw positive shifts," he said.
Oleksiy Haran believes that thanks to the signed agreement, U.S. President Donald Trump has something to show his voters.
"This is important for Trump. He shows his voters. We gave him a gift on the last day of the 100th day. He can report to his voters, shout, ‘Look at the agreement I secured, while Biden was wasting our money, but I will put it into the Ukraine recovery fund, and then we will get it back with profits.’
We don’t know when this will happen. We don’t know the exact volume of these minerals. It will require colossal investments. And the first 10 years, the profits will remain in Ukraine. But after the 10th year, they will be shared 50-50. And telling Trump, ‘No, we’re starting to make amendments’—this will again provoke Trump’s irritation with Ukraine. They will throw this at him, whisper it to him, and amplify it," the political scientist believes.
