New European military alliance possible if NATO fails to counter Russian aggression — analyst
In the event of Russian aggression against NATO, and if the Alliance is unable to provide a worthy response, a new military alliance will need to be formed in Europe
Political scientist Vitalii Kulyk expressed this opinion on Espreso TV.
"Today, I don't see that the security structure has fundamentally changed in Europe. However, one cannot fail to notice certain actions and sentiments in the European political establishment and society, which indicate that armed forces are returning as a factor in domestic and foreign policy. Armed Forces are once again in the spotlight. Military service is once again becoming relevant. For example, after the discrediting of the Bundeswehr, Germany is again returning to the need to increase its own defense capabilities. Germany is turning the pages of its past war and declaring the strengthening of its own army not only for its own defense, but also for the entire European continent," Kulyk explained.
The political scientist suggested that in the event of Russian aggression against NATO, a new military alliance would need to be formed in Europe, and without Ukraine, they would not be able to ensure peace on the European continent.
"The path to a new military alliance in Europe has yet to take place. I think that this path can be quick and easy - the inclusion of Ukraine in this alliance. However, it can also be dramatic. In particular, when Russia attacks NATO and the Alliance is unable to provide a worthy response, then as an alternative, there will be a need to form a new military alliance on what remains of NATO. This scenario does not mean anything good for Europeans," he added.
On February 14, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy stated that Russia would prepare 15 divisions this year, which would be fully or partially located in Belarus. From there, they could launch an offensive against NATO countries.
On April 21, the American Institute for the Study of War (ISW) reported that Russian authorities are likely preparing their population for a potential conflict with NATO in the long term.
