Russia shells residential sector in Zaporizhzhia: number of dead increased to 14, including a child
On the night of October 9, Russians attacked a residential sector in Zaporizhzhia, killing 14 people and injuring more than 70. Among the killed and wounded are children.
Ukrainian President, Volodymyr Zelenskyi, reported in his evening address.
"Zaporizhia is one of the Ukrainian cities against which Russia is directing its missile terror. At least 14 people died last night as a result of missile attacks on ordinary residential buildings in Zaporizhzhia. Unfortunately, this number may increase, because the demolition of the rubble is still ongoing. More than 70 people were injured , including 11 children" - he noted.
According to the president, all victims receive help. Hundreds of people were left homeless as a result of Russian shelling.
Volodymyr Zelenskyi added that the entire entrance from the first to the sixth floor was destroyed when one of the Ka-22 heavy anti-ship missiles hit an ordinary 9-story residential building.
"It was a deliberate strike. The one who gave the order and those who carried it out knew where they were hitting" - the president emphasized.
"Zaporizhzhia. Update. The number of dead and injured has increased. Many of them are children. As a result of the missile attack on the city, 13 people died, including 1 child. 89 civilians were injured, including 11 children!" - he emphasized.
As of 6:10 p.m. on October 9, search and rescue operations are ongoing. People continue to be pulled out from under the rubble. There is a threat of complete destruction of the house.
Earlier, Oleksandr Starukh, the head of the Zaporizhia Regional Military Administration, reported in a telegram about 12 dead and 87 injured.
"Russians attacked Zaporizhzhia with twelve Kh-22 and Kh-59 rockets, which were launched from airplanes at night. Residential buildings in a peaceful quarter were destroyed. As a result, 12 people were killed and 87 injured, ten of whom were children. Currently, the work of liquidation of the consequences continues, and rescuers continue to get people out from under the rubble" - he emphasized.
The head of the Regional Military Administration noted that in the evening of October 8, Russians hit Zaporizhzhia with a cluster-type "Iskander". Air defense shot it down, but damage wreaked havoc on the private sector.
To help citizens affected by Russian attacks, special centers were created where people can receive the necessary counseling and temporary accommodation.
In the telegram, the State Emergency Service noted that as of 3:00 p.m. on October 9, emergency and rescue operations are ongoing at the sites of missile strikes. In total, 215 specialists and 58 units were involved. Equipment, including 85 employees of the State Emergency Service and 20 units of their equipment, as well as eight search dogs.

An air alert was announced in Zaporizhzhia and the region at 01:26.
"Russians continues to terrorize the city of Zaporizhzhia. Almost a dozen of new missile strikes. The consequences are being clarified" - Starukh wrote.
Later, the head of Zaporizhzhia Regional Military Administration reported that a high-rise building in the regional center was destroyed as a result of an enemy missile attack. There are victims.
"Rescuers, medics, all relevant services are working at the scene of the tragedy. People are already being provided with all the necessary assistance," Oleksandr Starukh said. "The city of Zaporizhzhia has become the object of massive terror by the occupier."
Later, the secretary of the Zaporizhzhya City Council, Anatolii Kurtev, reported that the entrance to a multi-story building was destroyed, 5 private houses, and about 40 other houses were damaged.
Later, the head of Zaporizhzhia Regional Military Administration, Oleksandr Starukh, specified that the enemy used tactical aviation for a missile attack on the regional center. According to preliminary information, the planes fired 12 missiles at Zaporizhzhia.
