Russia gets expelled from Danube Commission
At the 100th anniversary session, the Danube Commission decided that Russia's membership is incompatible in view of its missile and drone strikes on the Lower Danube in Ukraine
Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba announced the information.
“After failing to be elected to the International Court of Justice, the IMO, UNESCO, and the OPCW executive boards in November, Russia suffered another diplomatic defeat at the Danube Commission, one of the world's oldest international organizations,” Kuleba writes.
He notes that Russia has to withdraw from the Danube Commission by February 29, 2024, otherwise the members will no longer recognize their obligations to Russia under the founding Belgrade Convention. According to the Minister, this decision is an appropriate response to the violation of the principles of free and safe navigation on the Danube.
Reference. The Danube Commission is an international organization established by the Convention concerning the Regime of Navigation on the Danube, signed in Belgrade on August 18, 1948. The members of the Commission are Austria, Bulgaria, Croatia, Germany, Hungary, Moldova, Romania, Serbia, Slovakia, Ukraine and the United Kingdom.
