Russia's Foreign Ministry reports that this decision is allegedly a response to Riga's choice to lower the level of diplomatic relations.
The Russian Foreign Ministry also accused Latvia of “total Russophobia” and recalled “the complete cleansing of the Russian-language information space, the elimination of Soviet memorial and cultural heritage, and the criminal prosecution of compatriots.”
The Russian Federation has traditionally stated that “all responsibility for the current situation lies with the Latvian government.”
Latvian Foreign Minister Edgars Rinkēvičs announces the downgrading of diplomatic relations with Russia after Moscow's decision to expel the Estonian ambassador.
