This is stated in a report by the Institute for the Study of War (ISW).
The think tank emphasizes that such intentions of the Russian Federation are a clear violation of the Geneva Convention on prisoners of war.
For example, the Russian propaganda news agency RIA Novosti reported that on November 7, the Bogdan Khmelnytsky battalion took the oath of allegiance to Russia and will soon be deployed to Ukraine.
It is noted that the formation will operate as part of the Cascade group of the so-called DPR terrorist organization in Donetsk and Zaporizhzhia regions.
Russian sources claimed that the Russian command would treat the prisoners of war in the same way as Russian soldiers and that they would receive the same salaries and benefits.
ISW emphasized that according to Russian media, Russian troops have recruited up to 70 Ukrainian prisoners of war from various colonies in Russia to serve in the Bogdan Khmelnytsky battalion.
"The Geneva Convention on Prisoners of War prohibits the use of POWs in military activities on the side of the power that has captured them, stating that ''no prisoner of war may at any time be sent to or detained in areas where he may be exposed to the fire of the combat zone'' and shall not ''be employed on labor which is of an unhealthy or dangerous nature," experts of the Institute for the Study of War noted.
