Former national security adviser John Bolton calls Secretary of State Marco Rubio’s warnings against sanctioning countries that buy Russian oil “total nonsense”

The Hill reported the information.

Earlier on Tuesday, Rubio argued that heavy sanctions would undermine the U.S.’s role as a peace broker, potentially prolonging the war and causing more casualties.

“So we’re trying to avoid that. We hope to avoid that,” Rubio added, after slamming European countries for continuing to purchase Russian oil.

Bolton, responding to Rubio’s remarks, stated that the U.S. must take a leading role in sanctioning Russia.

“And if we don‘t provide it, the war in Ukraine will continue to move slowly and at a high cost in Russia‘s favor. That‘s what Putin is counting on,” he said.

The former national security adviser claimed the war has taken a turn for the worse since Trump met with Putin in Alaska.

“Since the Alaska summit with Trump, he‘s acted like he‘s had a free hand,” Bolton said, speaking of Putin. “And I‘m afraid his perception of reality in Ukraine is accurate at this point.”

Rubio said the U.S. shouldn’t increase sanctions now but could change its stance later, noting it remains the only country able to engage both Ukraine and Russia.

“As you can see, the President’s already repeatedly expressed his deep disappointment at the direction that Putin is taking this, even after Alaska. And at some point he may have to decide to impose new sanctions,” he added.

  • U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio stated that President Donald Trump has options for imposing economic sanctions on Russia if necessary to end the war in Ukraine.
