Resisted without Western weapons: Ukraine’s top general reflects on Kyiv's defense in first days of Russian invasion
On the third anniversary of Kyiv region’s liberation from Russian occupying forces, Ukraine's Commander-in-Chief Oleksandr Syrskyi shared details about the Defense Forces' operation
He wrote about it on social media.
He stated that the Kyiv Defense Operation lasted 38 days — from the start of the full-scale invasion to the final expulsion of Russian forces from the Kyiv region. At the time, Syrskyi was leading Ukraine’s Ground Forces.
"Based on intelligence, I understood that Kyiv would be one of the main targets. I put myself forward to lead the capital’s defense, and I was given this responsibility and this honor. In the very short time before the full-scale invasion, we carried out all necessary preparations — Kyiv and the region were divided into defense sectors, commanders were appointed, internal and external defense lines were established, troops and equipment were positioned, engineering fortifications were built, strongholds were reinforced, and a fire system was set up," he said.
According to him, Russian forces faced fierce resistance in towns that became symbols of Ukraine's resilience — particularly in the hero cities of Bucha, Irpin, and Hostomel.
"Ukrainians stood up to fight because we all understood: defending Kyiv meant defending Ukraine, its independence, and its future. There were no HIMARS, no Bradleys, no Western weapons yet, but it was already clear — Ukrainians could and would defend their country and their freedom," Syrskyi emphasized.
He noted that thanks to the fearlessness of Ukrainian soldiers and volunteers, the dedication of civilian supporters, and the unwavering help of local residents, Ukraine not only stopped Russian troops but pushed them out of the Kyiv region, setting the stage for future counteroffensives.
"The victory in the Kyiv operation was not just a major military success — it was a powerful signal to the world: Ukraine is fighting. Ukraine will not be broken. Ukraine can win. And Ukraine will win. I am proud of every soldier, sergeant, and officer who, in a defining moment of our history, showed courage, skill, and resilience. I bow my head in memory of those who gave their lives for Kyiv region’s liberation and Ukraine’s victory," the Commander-in-Chief concluded.
