"It is more and more difficult to get the necessary unanimity in the EU for more sanctions. Nonetheless, we will propose an ambitious new package," he said.
Two senior diplomats from Poland and Lithuania told Reuters that the 10th package of EU sanctions against Russia should be ready by February 24. According to them, Poland and Lithuania want nuclear restrictions in the new EU sanctions against Russia, probably including sanctions against Rosatom.
The diplomats also said they would also like new sanctions against Russia's ally Belarus, where they say there are loopholes that have allowed Moscow to circumvent European sanctions in goods trade, including furniture.
The same day, Polish news agency PAP reported that the tenth package of sanctions against Russia is planned to be adopted in early February, before the EU-Ukraine summit in Kyiv. This was confirmed by the Permanent Representative of Poland to the EU Andrzej Sadoś: "The work has really accelerated. Poland in the group of like-minded countries is now proposing further sanctions. Strengthening the existing restrictions is also an ongoing process".
