No quick exit from Russian gas for EU - Ryabtsev
Gennady Ryabtsev says the EU will not be able to impose an embargo on Russian gas in the seventh package of sanctions
This opinion was expressed by an energy expert on Espreso TV live on air.
"In my opinion, the EU will not be able to impose an embargo on Russian gas in the seventh package of sanctions. Unlike oil, the situation with Russian gas is much more complicated and the EU will not be able to abandon it very quickly. This means that all members of the European Union need to prepare for the fact that during the heating season, the Russian Federation can cut off the supply of gas to all gas pipelines, without exception. The Russians may stop gas supplies to Europe for several weeks. Such a scenario is quite possible and the EU understands it, that's why they are taking measures," Ryabtsev explained.
The expert emphasized that the EU countries have increased purchases of terminals for receiving liquefied gas on land.
"Europe is preparing for various scenarios and taking measures to be ready for any actions by the Russian Federation. EU countries have increased the purchase of terminals for receiving liquefied gas on land. Measures are also being taken to reduce gas capacity in those industries where this can be done. They plan to replace gas with thermal coal in Europe and increase the capacity of nuclear power plants," he added.
