Forget Georgia's Euro-Atlantic movement: diplomat explains what to expect if election results are legitimised
Georgian diplomat Archil Tsintsadze believes that if the election results in the country are legitimised, the country will continue to drift between Europe and Russia
He expressed this opinion on Espreso TV.
"If the election results in Georgia are recognised and legitimised, the country's Euro-Atlantic movement can be forgotten. More than 99% of the ballots have already been counted and the Georgian Dream is gaining more than 55% of the vote. If this party stays in power, I think the country will not really move towards Europe. I think that the country will maintain a kind of neutrality that the Russian Federation likes very much. At the same time, Georgia will not be increasing its cooperation with Russia on a large scale. I am sure that there are a large number of citizens in Georgia who will not allow the country to drift towards Russia," Tsintsadze explained.
According to the diplomat, the future scenario in Georgia largely depends on the authorities' attempts to legitimise the election results.
"I would also like to note that in this situation, much depends on the position of the West. In particular, whether the West will allow the Georgian Dream to legitimise the elections. Also, the opposition has many democratic tools to prevent the Georgian Dream from legitimising the results of these elections," he added.
- Parliamentary elections were held in Georgia on Saturday, 26 October. Over 99% of the votes have been counted, with the ruling Georgian Dream party leading the pack.
