Turkey seeks U.S. waiver extension to keep buying Russian gas
Turkey is pushing to extend a U.S. sanctions waiver that allows it to continue purchasing Russian natural gas, officials familiar with the matter said
Bloomberg writes about this.
Ankara’s exemption from sanctions on Gazprombank JSC, granted in December, is set to expire on March 20, according to the officials, who requested anonymity. Turkey has not publicly disclosed the waiver's timeline but is working to secure an extension.
Russia supplied over 45% of Turkey’s gas imports last year, crucial during a harsh winter and necessary for summer as hydropower output declines.
Treasury and Finance Minister Mehmet Simsek is expected to discuss the extension with U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent this week, the officials said.
The U.S. sanctioned Gazprombank in November to curb Russia’s gas revenues but later exempted major buyers, including Turkey and Hungary.
Turkey’s Treasury, Energy Ministry, and the U.S. Treasury declined to comment, Bloomberg adds.
