Trump declares record number of emergencies in first 100 days
President Donald Trump declared a record number of emergencies in his first 100 days, more than any other modern-day president in U.S. history
Axios reports.
Trump has declared a state of emergency to impose tariffs on almost all countries, accelerate the extraction of natural resources and energy, and curb migration by placing U.S. military personnel along the U.S.-Mexico border.
The report explains that the U.S. president has the authority to declare a state of emergency at any time based on almost any reason. He does not require Congress's support for this, and is not obligated to prove a threat.
In 1983, the U.S. Supreme Court effectively removed Congress's ability to veto a state of emergency.
“Trump's second-term actions have plunged the U.S. firmly into uncharted territory — redrawing the limits of executive power in real time, and fueling fears of a permanent emergency state,” Axios notes.
- Notably, on April 3, Trump declared a state of emergency to “increase competitiveness, protect sovereignty, and strengthen national and economic security.”
