Russian dancers perform in 8 Swedish cities under Ballet of Ukraine name
The troupe Ballet of Ukraine, which presented the ballet The Nutcracker in Sweden in December, claiming to be a Ukrainian dance company, has strong ties to Russia
This is revealed in an investigation by Swedish broadcaster SVT.
Journalists discovered that the address in Kyiv listed on the Ballet of Ukraine website is actually an office building and shopping center, and there is no ballet studio. SVT found that the ticket booking company Touring Actors is based on a Russian server, owned by a Russian citizen who is registered as a business owner in Moscow and pays taxes in Russia.
Moreover, 7 out of the 14 dancers listed on the website actively work in Russia.
“We found no Ukrainian or Russian company that received money from Sweden. However, we discovered that payments for at least six performances in Sweden were made to a Swiss company involved in artificial intelligence, which is owned by a former Russian banker,” the SVT report states.
The composition and repertoire of Ballet of Ukraine are identical to those of the Russian ballet from St. Petersburg. The Ballet of Ukraine uses the same press materials as the "Moscow Ballet" — a Russian company that is in the process of liquidation.
Russian businessman from Touring Actors denied SVT's information about the links to Russia and called it slander. He stated that Ballet of Ukraine does not hire Russian dancers.
Under the guise of a Ukrainian ballet, the Russian dancers performed in the following cities:
- Lund – December 5th;
- Vänersborg – December 6th;
- Lerum – December 7th;
- Varberg – December 8th;
- Sandviken – December 14th;
- Västervik – December 15th;
- Östersund – December 19th;
- Piteå – December 20th.
Press secretary of the National Opera of Ukraine Lana Roksi noted that there are so many ballet groups calling themselves Ukrainian that they are difficult to track.
“They are profiting from our suffering,” Roksi said.
