Putin has window to attack Europe before U.S. leadership changes in 2029
Ukrainian journalist Vitaliy Portnikov says Putin could strike Baltic countries or Poland before January 2029, exploiting Trump’s presidency and limited U.S. intervention
Journalist Vitaliy Portnikov noted that until the change of power in the United States, while Donald Trump remains president, Putin has a window of opportunity to attack the Baltic countries or Poland.
He expressed this opinion on the Espreso air.
“Putin has a window of opportunity connected to Donald Trump being in the White House. Because Putin believes that Trump will not lift a finger to stop the military actions. And in this situation, he has the possibility to attack European countries until January 2029, until the change of power in the U.S. If Putin ends the war in Ukraine, for example, in 2025, then he has a couple of years to restore his military resources and attack the Baltic countries or Poland,” the journalist noted.
According to him, this does not necessarily have to be a full-scale war. For example, Russian troops could enter Narva and declare that they are protecting the Russian-speaking population in Estonia. Or Russian troops from Belarus could enter Daugavpils in Latvia and claim they are defending the Russian-speaking population.
“Who told you that in this situation there will be a real, big war if the United States says they will not fight Russia because it could lead to a nuclear conflict? The parties could again dig in along some line, as happened with Russia and Ukraine, where Russian troops would be stopped. And there will just be a line of contact, and part of Estonia or Latvia’s territory will be controlled by Russians. And this, undoubtedly, will be the death of NATO. That is exactly what Putin wants, without any big war,” Portnikov commented.
- Earlier reports said that in 2025 Estonia plans to begin building fortifications with bunkers on the border with Russia.
- On April 23, a video emerged showing that the Estonian Defense Forces plan to create a military base in the city of Narva, located on the border with Russia. Over two hundred Estonian servicemen and allied units will be stationed there.
