Putin gifts Trump portrait amid diplomatic thaw between US, Russia
Vladimir Putin sent US President Donald Trump a “personal gift” during his meeting with special envoy Steve Witkoff in Moscow last week
This was reported by Axios and BBC.
While Donald Trump criticized his portrait in the Colorado State Capitol, Witkoff described the new one as a "beautiful portrait" of the US president created by a "leading Russian artist."
The portrait was not shown publicly. However, the special envoy mentioned that Trump was "clearly touched by it" by it.
Portraits are a significant part of Trump's brand. In January, he made headlines when he released an official portrait, which critics described in varying terms as either serious or sinister.
During his election campaign, Trump frequently used his most iconic photo — taken after an assassination attempt during a rally in Pennsylvania. In the image, Trump, with a bloodied ear, raises his fist and urges supporters to "fight, fight, fight."
The fact that Putin gave Trump a new portrait indicates a diplomatic thaw between the two countries following Trump's return to the White House.
