Nigeria joins BRICS as partner country
On Friday, January 17, 2025, Nigeria officially joined the BRICS bloc as a partner country
This is reported by the government of Brazil, which is chairing BRICS this year.
As noted, Nigeria became the ninth partner country of BRICS, joining Belarus, Bolivia, Cuba, Kazakhstan, Malaysia, Thailand, Uganda, and Uzbekistan.
"Nigeria is the sixth most populous country in the world and the largest in Africa, as well as one of the continent's largest economies. It shares common interests with other BRICS members," the press release states.
It is worth noting that the status of a partner country in the bloc provides for permanent participation in special summit sessions and meetings of foreign ministers of BRICS countries. Partners may also be invited to other ministerial-level events, such as trade discussions, national security meetings, and parliamentary forums. Partners can join BRICS' final documents.
For reference: BRICS is an international organization of the largest developing countries by area and population, established in 2006. The organization includes Brazil, Russia, India, China, South Africa, Egypt, Ethiopia, Iran, and the United Arab Emirates. BRICS positions itself as an alternative to institutions such as the World Bank and the International Monetary Fund, where, according to members of the union, Western countries dominate.
- Recently, Indonesia also joined BRICS as a full-fledged member.
