Hungary to block Ukraine's EU accession over rights of Transcarpathian Hungarians
Hungarian Foreign Minister Peter Szijjarto stated that his country will block progress in Ukraine's EU accession talks until the rights of Hungarians in Transcarpathia, which were taken away in 2015, are restored
Hungary's Minister of Foreign Affairs, Péter Szijjártó, stated that his country will block progress in Ukraine’s EU accession negotiations until the rights of the Hungarians in Transcarpathia, which were taken away in 2015, are restored.
He wrote this on his Facebook page.
After a phone call with Austrian colleague Beate Meinl-Reisinger, Szijjártó emphasized that, despite numerous promises, the Ukrainian government has not restored the rights of the Hungarian community that were revoked seven years ago.
"I appreciate Beate Meinl-Reisinger's intention to help, but the situation remains that the Ukrainian government - despite constant promises and nice words - has not returned minority rights taken away from the Hungarian community since 2015," he stated.
In his opinion, this situation is unacceptable and contradicts European values.
"Therefore, as long as this sad situation persists, there can be no progress in Ukraine's EU accession negotiations," Szijjártó emphasized.
- Earlier, Zelenskyy stated that one country — Hungary — is blocking Ukraine's EU membership decision. In his view, when the final decision is made, Hungary will be looking at US policy.
- In particular, the final document of the European Council on the Ukraine summit was supported by all member states of the bloc, except for Hungary.
- On March 15, Hungary’s Prime Minister Viktor Orbán presented 12 demands to the European Union, one of which is "A Union, but without Ukraine."
