Brussels seeks new funds to boost Ukraine’s defense capabilities, says EU Defense Commissioner
EU Commissioner for Defense and Space Andrius Kubilius says Ukraine's army is a key player and must be supported through new tools and increased defense spending
This opinion was expressed by EU Commissioner for Defense and Space Andrius Kubilius on Espreso TV.
"Ukraine is well represented in the agenda. And not just in terms of how we can help Ukraine by increasing our defense spending, but also by strengthening military support. We are using new tools from both the EU and NATO. Together we are looking for new opportunities to find additional funds to allocate for aid to Ukraine.
We already see the Save program, which offers loans that member states can take jointly with Ukraine to provide assistance. But what is also extremely important for us is how crucial Ukraine is. Their army has undergone combat training during this war and has transitioned to a new phase of warfare, particularly in terms of innovation. Therefore, Ukraine and its army today are a tremendous asset for the Euro-Atlantic community overall," he said.
Andrius Kubilius noted that the European community is learning from Ukraine and looking at how to strengthen defense capabilities on the European continent together.
"We understand that the enemy may become increasingly aggressive. And, of course, we must take into account the long-term perspective, since the Americans have also shifted their focus to the Pacific region for some reason. But here in Europe, we must assume the authority for deterrence and for building a new security architecture. In this context, we consider Ukraine to be an excellent partner and a future EU member.
Therefore, we must begin discussing not only the material components of the defense industry, but also institutional and political readiness for defense. All of this requires a vision of what this new security architecture should look like, one we must build with Ukraine’s help. It is very important to have a partnership with Ukraine, as this is the new reality, the new architecture," the commissioner emphasized.
