104% China tariffs take effect at midnight – White House
The United States has imposed tariffs of 104% on China because Beijing has not removed its retaliation
This was reported by Fox News correspondent Edward Lawrence, citing White House spokeswoman Karoline Leavitt.
The increased U.S. tariffs on China will take effect on April 9.
This marks a rise in tariffs from 54% to 104%, as China refused to cancel mirror tariffs on U.S. goods earlier.
White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt has issued a warning for countries that imposed retaliatory tariffs.
“Countries like China, who have chosen to retaliate and try to double down on their mistreatment of American workers, are making a mistake,” Leavitt was quoted by CNN.
“President Trump has a spine of steel, and he will not break, and America will not break under his leadership,” she added.
President Donald Trump’s sweeping tariffs
On April 2, President Trump announced tariffs at least 10% on nearly all goods imported into the United States. These tariffs are set to take effect on April 9.
China has stated that, starting April 10, it will impose additional tariffs of 34% on all U.S. goods. In response, Donald Trump said Beijing "played it wrong."
Trump later declared that, if China does not cancel its 34% tariffs by April 8, the U.S. will introduce new, even higher tariffs on Chinese goods. Meanwhile, China called this a "typical economic intimidation tactic."
