New Wagner cemetery discovered in Luhansk region

Journalists managed to find data that matches the inscriptions on the tombstones of 37 men – a total of 20 court verdicts against people who were buried near Luhansk. 35 of them were Russians, one was a citizen of Belarus, and another was born in Uzbekistan.

Journalists found these people on social networks and were able to talk to some of their relatives.

All cases are similar: prisoners volunteered to fight as part of Wagner PMC, left the colonies at the end of August, and in October they stopped reaching out. Neither Wagner representatives nor other structures contacted their relatives.

The burial near Luhansk is already the third cemetery where dozens of graves of those prisoners who fought in Ukraine have been discovered.

In December, 47 graves of convicts were discovered in Bakunsk, Krasnodar Krai. In just two months, the number of burials increased sixfold, and by the end of January there were already 270 graves of prisoners. All of them are decorated with wreaths with a red, black and yellow emblem from Wagner PMC patches and flags.

Another cemetery - or rather a cemetery alley - was discovered by the residents of the village of Fryanovo near Moscow in the neighboring village: 22 graves with the same red, black and yellow wreaths. There is data on 12 people whose initials completely match.

Wagner PMC founder Yevgeny Prigozhin confirmed that the cemetery in the Krasnodar region belongs to his private military company, but has not yet commented on Moscow and Luhansk cemeteries.

In total, the BBC, Mediazona and volunteers managed to accurately establish the names of 820 dead prisoners. 600 of them died in the last three months.

• Wagner PMC was founded in 2014 and operated in Syria, Libya, CAR and Ukraine. There they committed war crimes and crimes against humanity. After the full-scale invasion of Ukraine, they took part in massacres of civilians. In summer they started to recruit Russian prisoners to the group.
