NATO summit in Vilnius will discuss Ukraine's membership, Lithuanian president says

Lithuanian President Gitanas Nausėda said that the possibility of Ukraine's membership in the Alliance will be discussed at the NATO summit in Vilnius this summer

He made the statement during a visit to Portugal.

Nauseda discussed with Portuguese Prime Minister Antonio Costa preparations for the July NATO summit in Vilnius, security and defence issues, and EU sanctions against Russia.

Speaking about the preparations for the NATO Summit in Vilnius, Nauseda emphasised that it will be a historic opportunity to make key decisions for the security of the Alliance.

"It is important to agree to increase defence spending, strengthen missile and air defence, and send a powerful message about Ukraine's cooperation with NATO and its membership in the Euro-Atlantic security architecture," the Lithuanian president said.

He noted that it is also necessary to strengthen cooperation in the fight against Russian propaganda and disinformation.
