NATO and EU urge Russia to urgently reinstate "grain agreement"
The North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) has called on Russia to urgently resume its participation in the UN-brokered "grain agreement", which allowed Ukraine to restart grain exports through the Black Sea in the face of the global food crisis.
Reuters reports, referring to the statement of NATO spokeswoman Oana Lungescu.
"President Putin must stop turning food into weapons and stop his illegal war against Ukraine. We call on Russia to reconsider its decision and urgently renew the agreement, which will allow food to reach those who need it most", she said.
In addition, Lungescu also added that all members of Alliance support the agreement, which was reached with the help of Turkey, noting that grain exports from Ukraine as a result helped lower food prices around the world.
Also today on Twitter, Josep Borrell called on Russia to cancel its decision.
"Russia’s decision to suspend participation in the Black Sea deal puts at risks the main export route of much needed grain and fertilisers to address the global food crisis caused by its war against Ukraine. The EU urges Russia to revert its decision", the message says.
