More than 15,000 people went missing during war in Ukraine
Director of International Commission on Missing Persons (ICMP) Matthew Holliday said that during the war in Ukraine, more than 15,000 people have already disappeared
Reuters reports.
He noted that it is currently unknown how many people were forcibly displaced, detained in Russia, separated from their families, or died and were buried in makeshift graves.
According to Holliday, the figure of 15,000 is conservative, considering that only in Mariupol, according to Ukrainian authorities, 25,000 people have died or gone missing.
Director of the Commission said that numbers are huge, and problems Ukraine is facing are huge.
He believes that process of investigating cases of missing persons in Ukraine will continue for years, even after cessation of hostilities.
"What is key now is setting in place all the correct measures to ensure that as many persons can be identified. The vast majority of missing and dead are victims of war crimes, so perpetrators must be brought to justice", Holliday added.
