Moldova exposes preparation of coup d'état by another state
Moldova has identified the plotters who were preparing a coup. Of the five suspects, two have been in custody since December 2022
NewsMaker reports that the Moldovan Information and Security Service, together with the Prosecutor's Office for Combating Organized Crime and Special Cases, is investigating a case of treason and espionage, an agent network that included Moldovans and representatives of another state. The press service did not specify which country.
The perpetrators were five Moldovan citizens, two of whom were arrested in December 2022 and three were suspected.
The investigation established that they had been recruited by the intelligence services of another state to help destabilize the situation and change the constitutional order by force.
Special services identified foreigners who were engaged in espionage and financed people from Moldova.
“The investigation began in 2020 and recorded both planned and partially completed actions. We are talking about money transfers, provoking inter-ethnic hatred, intolerance towards certain categories of citizens, and hiring people prone to violence to participate in protests,” the statement says.
The Moldovan Information and Security Service emphasized that the Criminal Code provides for 12 to 20 years in prison for treason and espionage.
