Minsk court sentences exiled opposition leader Tsikhanouskaya to 15 years in prison
On Monday, March 6, a Minsk court sentenced Belarusian opposition leader Sviatlana Tsikhanouskaya to 15 years in prison in absentia. Three other opposition members were also sentenced to lengthy terms
This was reported by the Belarusian Belta news agency.
Former Minister of Culture of Belarus Pavel Latushka was also sentenced in absentia to 18 years in prison. Three members of the Coordination Council of the Belarusian opposition – Maria Moroz, Olga Kovalkova and Sergei Dylevsky each got a 12-year prison sentence.
All the defendants were found guilty of a 'conspiracy' to seize state power 'unconstitutionally'. The court also accused them of creating and leading an 'extremist formation'.
The opposition figures are accused of committing actions that allegedly threaten the national security of Belarus and are aimed at causing social hatred.
“I don't think about what they wanted to say to me with their sentences. With or without it, I and the democratic forces have done and will continue to do everything possible to release our political prisoners and bring our country to democratic changes,” Tsikhanouskaya commented on the verdict on Telegram.
