Ukrainian Armed Forces confirm withdrawal from Chasiv Yar area
Ukrainian troops have retreated from a section of Chasiv Yar in Donetsk region, the Ukrainian Armed Forces have confirmed
Radio Svoboda writes about this.
According to Nazar Voloshyn, spokesman for the Khortytsia operational and strategic grouping of troops, this concerns the Kanal neighborhood, the statement reads.
According to him, it was inexpedient to hold it, as it threatened the lives and health of the soldiers, and the positions of Ukrainian defenders there were destroyed.
"The command decided to retreat to more secure, prepared positions. However, even there the enemy does not stop its active hostilities. They have some specific deadlines that they have not been able to meet for several months in a row," he said during the United News national telethon.
Radio Svoboda recalls that on the night of July 3, the DeepState project said the Russian army managed to capture the Canal neighborhood in Chasiv Yar. This neighborhood - also known as Novyi - is separated from most of the city by the Siverskyi Donets-Donbas Canal, which the Ukrainian Armed Forces are currently defending. Fighting for the neighborhood began in early April 2024, when Russian troops advanced west of Bakhmut.
In June, British intelligence noted that Chasiv Yar is valuable to Russia because of its strategic location on a hill and its use as a logistics hub for the Ukrainian Armed Forces.
Chasiv Yar is a town in the Donetsk region with a population of over 10,000 people before the start of the full-scale Russian invasion. It became the front line after the Russian military captured the town of Bakhmut, located 10 kilometers from Chasiv Yar.
