Trump plans to rename Department of Defense as Department of War

White House spokeswoman Karoline Leavitt confirmed this information on X.

"TODAY AT THE WHITE HOUSE: Trump to Sign Executive Order Changing Department of Defense to Department of War," she wrote.

Earlier, Breitbart reported that Trump and Pentagon chief Pete Hegseth would rename the defense department as part of the U.S. administration's campaign. According to a White House official, under the forthcoming presidential order the Pentagon is to be called the Department of War, and its head — the Secretary of War.

“Everybody likes that we had an unbelievable history of victory when it was Department of War,” Trump previously commented on the possibility of changing the department's name.

At the same time, Hegseth said that the U.S. “won WWI, and we won WWII, not with the Department of Defense, but with a War Department, with the Department of War.”

“As the president has said, we’re not just defense, we’re offense,” he added.
