Russian troops stop offensive in Kupyansk direction — General Staff

Ukraine’s General Staff reported the information in the evening statement on January 16.

There were 85 combat clashes over the last day. In total, Russia launched 2 missile and 13 air strikes, and 32 MLRS attacks at the positions of Ukrainian troops and populated areas. Unfortunately, Russian terrorist attacks resulted in civilian casualties.

Private residential buildings and other civilian infrastructure were destroyed and damaged. 

Frontline update and attacks at Ukraine

Near the state Ukrainian border with Russia and Belarus, the operational situation has not changed.

In the northeastern border area, the Russian army maintains a military presence in the border areas, conducts active sabotage activities to prevent the deployment of Ukrainian troops to threatened areas, and increases the density of minefields along the state border. Over 20 settlements came under Russian artillery and mortar fire.

In the Kupyansk direction, Russian forces did not conduct any assault actions. About 10 settlements came under artillery and mortar fire.

In the Lyman direction, Ukrainian defenders repelled 24 attacks near 7 settlements in Donetsk and Luhansk regions. About 15 settlements suffered from Russian artillery and mortar shelling.

In the Bakhmut direction, Ukraine's troops repelled 6 Russia's attacks near 3 settlements in the Donetsk region. Over 10 settlements came under artillery and mortar fire.

In the Avdiivka direction, Ukrainian defenders fended off 15 Novobakhmutivka, Stepove, Avdiivka and another 15 attacks near Pervomaiske and Nevelske, Donetsk region. Russian forces, with the support of aviation, tried to improve their tactical situation. About 15 settlements came under Russian artillery and mortar fire.

In the Marinka direction, the Ukrainian Defense Forces continue to hold back Russian troops near Krasnohorivka, Marinka and Novomykhailivka, Donetsk region. Russian troops, with the support of aviation, tried to break through the defense of Ukrainian troops 16 times without success. In addition, they launched an air strike near the village of Kostyantynivka, Donetsk region. Six settlements came under artillery and mortar fire.

In the Shakhtarsk direction, Russian troops did not conduct assault operations. They launched an air strike near the settlement of Vodiane, Donetsk region. Over 10 settlements came under artillery and mortar fire.

In the Zaporizhzhia direction, the Ukrainian Defense Forces repelled an attack near west of Verbove, Zaporizhzhia region. Russian troops tried to regain lost ground to no avail. About 25 settlements came under Russian artillery and mortar fire.

In the Kherson direction, Russian troops shelled Kherson city and 3 more districts in the region.

"The enemy still intends to drive our units out of their footholds on the left bank of the Dnipro River. During the day, the enemy made 13 unsuccessful assaults on the positions of our troops, was rebuffed and suffered significant losses. Ukrainian soldiers are steadfastly holding the line, continuing to hold their positions and inflicting fire damage on the enemy," the General Staff noted.

Ukrainian Armed Forces’ strikes against Russian forces 

Over the day, Ukrainian aviation struck Russian personnel, weapons and military equipment concentration. Air defense forces also destroyed a Russian Kh-59 guided missile.

Ukrainian missile troops struck a concentration of Russian personnel, control center and ammunition depot.
