This is stated in an intelligence analysis dated August 9.

According to the UK intelligence service, Russian Ground Forces “highly likely” captured approximately 500–550 square kilometers of Ukrainian territory in July 2025.

“The Russian Ground Forces seized a similar amount of Ukrainian territory in June 2025, following month on month increases from March 2025. The Russian Ground Forces continued to make tactical advances in Donetsk oblast, primarily to the north-east and south-west of Pokrovsk,” the assessment said.

UK intelligence noted that Russian forces continue attempts to encircle Pokrovsk, as well as to put pressure on the remaining logistical routes into the city.

UK intelligence also analyzed the situation in the Sumy region. The analysts stated that over the past two weeks Russian troops have not achieved any notable gains there.

“Continued losses and Ukrainian counterattacks have likely frustrated Russian intent to establish a buffer zone in the Sumy region,” the report emphasized.

  • On August 8, the invading Russian army lost at least 940 servicemen. Ukrainian defenders also destroyed 41 Russian artillery systems and 5 tanks.
  • Even though Russia’s offensive was the slowest of the “summer” campaign this week, fighting stretched across the whole front. The Kupiansk and Siversk sectors were busier than usual. Around Pokrovsk and in the Lyman area, nearly half of all battles continue to occur, while clashes in the Sumy region keep declining.
