North Korean MLRS marks new phase in Russia's arms dependence - Defense Express
Valeriy Ryabykh, a military expert and development director of the media and consulting company Defense Express, noted that Russia is forced to turn to North Korea for help due to losses in artillery, including MLRS, and a shortage of its own ammunition
He shared the information on Espreso TV.
"The fact that the Russian army has received multiple launch rocket systems (MLRS) from North Korea indicates that Russia has been unable to operate without external weapon supplies for a long time. First and foremost, this military assistance is coming through North Korea, though it can be expected that Russia will receive not only weapons from the DPRK. Regarding the North Korean M1991 MLRS, it is a large-caliber 240mm system with 22 launch tubes, and it is an analog of the Soviet-origin 220mm Uragan MLRS," noted the military expert.
According to him, the appearance of North Korean MLRS in the Russian military arsenal could indicate, first of all, significant losses in Russia's artillery, particularly in MLRS, which prevents them from performing tasks using their own systems.
"Secondly, it also suggests that Russia is unable to produce enough 220mm caliber ammunition for its existing artillery systems and MLRS. Therefore, Russia's growing dependence on supplies from North Korea will determine what happens on the fronts of the Russian-Ukrainian war," emphasized the development director of the media and consulting company Defense Express.
- Recently, the Russian army has been using North Korean artillery shells in combat against Ukraine. Millions of ammunition are regularly arriving at Russia's Far East from the Rajin port (North Korea).
