Kremlin intensifies Iran support amidst U.S. strikes on pro-Iranian militants – ISW

Russian officials are doubling down on their backing for Iran in response to U.S. strikes to prevent attacks by Iran-backed militants in Iraq, Syria, and Yemen on U.S. and other interests

The Institute for the Study of War (ISW) shared the information in its report.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Russia condemned the U.S. retaliatory strikes on Iran-backed militias' positions in Iraq, Syria, and Yemen on February 3, as outlined in the ISW report.

Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova labeled these strikes as a “blatant act of American-British aggression” and claimed that they demonstrate U.S. policy’s “aggressive nature” and “complete disregard for international law.”

Zakharova asserted that the U.S. airstrikes were deliberately crafted to escalate the conflict in the Middle East.

Furthermore, she criticized the UK for its participation in the airstrike, stating that the UK has yet to answer for its persistent support of provocative U.S. policies.

ISW reported that Russia has called for a United Nations Security Council meeting in response to the U.S. strikes, scheduled for February 5.

Analysts observe that Russia frequently employs references to international law to undermine the legitimate actions of the United States in the Middle East.
