Democrat introduces bill to block Trump's Greenland acquisition plans
A California congressman has filed legislation aimed at preventing President Trump from pursuing his stated interest in acquiring Greenland through purchase or military action
Axios reported the information.
Rep. Jimmy Gomez (D-Calif.) is introducing the Greenland Sovereignty Protection Act, a measure designed to prohibit federal funding for any attempt to acquire the Danish-controlled island territory. The three-page bill would block government funds from being used to facilitate "the invasion, annexation, purchase, or other form of acquisition of Greenland," according to details obtained by the publication.
The legislation comes as Trump has publicly discussed the possibility of acquiring Greenland in recent weeks, despite repeated statements from Danish and Greenlandic officials that the island is not for sale. The bill would also prevent funding for deploying additional U.S. troops to the island or launching public influence campaigns designed to persuade Greenlanders to support American control.
The Democratic proposal directly counters a Republican bill also introduced Monday that would authorize Trump to "take such steps as may be necessary" to acquire the island. However, both measures face long odds in Congress, where Republicans control both chambers but many have expressed opposition to Trump's suggestion of potential military action against Greenland.
Trump's Greenland comments intensified after a recent U.S. military operation in Venezuela that led to the extradition of Venezuelan leader Nicolás Maduro. Since then, the president has floated possible military interventions in several countries, including Venezuela, Greenland, Colombia, Mexico and Cuba.
Lawmakers from both parties have strongly opposed most of these suggestions, with many pointing out that Greenland, as a Danish territory, falls under the protection of NATO's Article 5 mutual defense clause.
