Kyslytsia urges IAEA to consider permanent presence at Zaporizhzia nuclear power plant
Ukraine's Permanent Representative to the UN Serhiy Kyslytsia has urged the IAEA to think about having a permanent presence at ZNPP to establish the real situation on the ground, and not fall for "a theatrical performance arranged by the Russian Federation."
He stated this at a meeting of the UN Security Council on August 23.
"We took the time to listen to the chatter of just fictitious sounds. The terrorist country does not stop playing with the international community. They had the courage to convene the UN Security Council to discuss their own provocations, their own terror at the Zaporizhzhia NPP. The current situation clearly shows us that nuclear threats appear due to the illegal Russian presence at the nuclear facility," Kyslytsia noted.
The Permanent Representative of Ukraine to the UN emphasized the need to withdraw Russian weapons and troops and return the Zaporizhzhia NPP under the legitimate control of Ukraine.
According to him, Ukraine appreciates the efforts of the IAEA and the UN to guarantee the safety of all Ukrainian nuclear facilities against the background of the Russian invasion. Ukraine welcomes the readiness of the IAEA and the Director General to send this mission to the occupied ZNPP.
"This visit must be carried out strictly in compliance with the national legislation of Ukraine and with full respect for international obligations. And considering the scale of the current challenges and threats, we also call on the IAEA to think about the permanent presence of its representatives at the ZNPP in order to return full control over this nuclear facility." object to Ukrainian experts," Kyslytsia emphasized.
He noted that Russia's demonstration of readiness to organize a mission at the ZANP has only one goal.
"Let's look at the basics. The nuclear power plant is a Ukrainian facility located on the territory of Ukraine. The occupiers taught certain hostages what to say and what to show to the IAEA representatives. That is why it is very important to conduct the mission in such a way that would allow the international community to see the real situation , which reigns there, and not a Russian theatrical performance," Kyslytsia said.
The Permanent Representative of Ukraine to the UN added that Russia should guarantee the physical security of the IAEA mission at the ZNPP.
