Kremlin reacts as Poland changes names of Kaliningrad and Kaliningrad region

Poland has officially changed the names of the city of Kaliningrad and the Kaliningrad region. The Kremlin called it Russophobia bordering on insanity

This was reported by the Polish edition of Rzeczpospolita.

According to a statement dated May 9, at a meeting on April 12, the committee decided that only the Polish name Królewiec should be used for the city with the Russian name Kaliningrad. The name Kaliningrad should not be used in Polish.

The committee added that the Polish name Królewiecka oblast, not Kaliningrad, is recommended for the administrative unit in which the city is located. The press release states that the changes will take effect from the date of the announcement, i.e. Tuesday, May 9, 2023.

"The city, which now has the Russian name Kaliningrad, is known in Poland by its traditional name Królewiec. The current Russian name is artificial and has no connection with the city or the region," the commission said in a statement.

In turn, Russian presidential spokesman Dmitry Peskov commented on the decision: "This is not even Russophobia anymore, these are some processes bordering on insanity that are taking place in Poland."

He added that throughout history, Warsaw has "from time to time slipped into this madness of its hatred of Russians" and "it does not bring anything good for Poland and the Poles."
