If Russia doesn't stop Ukrainian port blockade, all Russian exports must be banned urgently - Poroshenko
Former Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko, who is at the European Financial Congress in the Polish city of Sopot, has called for a total blockade of Russian exports. Ukrainian ports should be unblocked not only for grain exports but also for other goods, as well as for imports of raw materials for domestic industry, he urged.
This European Solidarity party shared the update.
"Why are we talking only about the export of Ukrainian grain, and not about the export of other Ukrainian goods. Why are we not talking about the import through Ukrainian ports of raw materials that provide jobs and the functioning of Ukrainian industry. Why is Russia, which is allegedly negotiating with Turkey on the one hand, bombing the transport infrastructure with missiles, which delivers the same grain to Odesa ports, Danube ports, and thus tries to deceive the world today," Poroshenko said.
"My proposal is completely different. I welcome the efforts of Turkey, which agreed to provide its naval forces, escorts of merchant ships. I ask that it be not only grain, but everything, because Ukraine's exports must function," said Petro Poroshenko.
"If Russia does not end the blockade, we must immediately within weeks, if not days, ensure a total blockade of Russian exports. Everything, not just grain or oil, not just gas - everything. Because 80% of Russian exports are by sea," he added.
"Today we can use the same mechanisms as when arresting the yachts of Russian oligarchs. We can find the same mechanisms that I used when there was an act of aggression against Ukraine in the Kerch Strait. Based on court decisions, we will arrest Russian ships until the blockade is lifted. This is called extraterritorial sanctions, which should be in the next packages. All the proposals have been written out," said the fifth president.
"I used the rostrum of the Sopot Congress to propose them in the same way as we did at the summit and congress of the European People's Party, the leading political force in the European Union. We have proposed similar steps to expand sanctions to be creative, not only to impose personal sanctions," Petro Poroshenko said.
"If we talk about personal, this is Bucha's list, because not only Putin and his clique, but every soldier, officer, general who took part in it should know that responsibility will be inevitable and therefore the next time he uses weapons against civilians, he will think three times and it will stop him," Poroshenko added.
"The issue of sanctions has been very carefully worked out and proposed. We do not need assistance in demining, we know the roads that can be used by trade caravans under the protection of Turkey. But we will not give anyone the right to take care of it, whether it is grain, whether it is oil, whether it is a raw material for food, whether it is fuel, or anything else. We are a sovereign state that has sovereign rights in the international Black Sea, and we will not allow any other status for the Russians," Poroshenko concluded.
