Russia attacks Sumy healthcare facility twice in one morning, killing 9, wounding 20
On the morning of Saturday, September 28, Russian troops attacked a healthcare facility in Sumy twice. The attack killed at least 9 people and injured 20 others, including police officers
According to Ukraine's State Emergency Service, as of 5:00 p.m., the number of people killed in the air strikes on a medical facility in Sumy is 9, and 20 people are wounded.
As of 09:20, 6 people were reported dead, including a police officer. Another policeman was wounded.
Ukraine's Minister of Internal Affairs Ihor Klymenko shared the information.
One person was killed in the initial attack on Sumy, which also destroyed the ceilings of several floors of a hospital, prompting the evacuation of patients and staff.
According to Klymenko, rescue teams and police arrived at the scene to assist, but as the evacuation was underway, Russia launched a second strike.
By 9:20 a.m., six people had been confirmed dead, including a police officer, while another officer was wounded.
According to the National Police, a total of 10 people were injured in the Russian attack.
The search and rescue operation is currently underway. Police investigative teams, explosives experts and all specialized services are working at the site of the attack.
The Sumy Regional Military Administration clarified that Russia struck a healthcare facility in the regional center with a drone. All necessary services are working on the spot.
Later, Russian troops carried out a second air strike on Sumy. According to the Regional Military Administration, they directed an attack drone at the residential sector.
President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyy responded to the Russian Shahed attack on the hospital in Sumy.
According to the President, as of 11:50 a.m., 8 people were killed.
“My condolences to the families and friends. Eleven people were wounded, 113 patients were evacuated from the hospital. The rescue operation is underway. We are eliminating the consequences and saving lives. We are doing everything we can to provide our people with the help they need. Everyone in the world who talks about this war should pay attention to what Russia is targeting. They are at war with hospitals, civilian objects, and people's lives. Only force can lead Russia to peace. Peace through force is the only right way. I thank everyone who helps us on this path,” Zelenskyy wrote.
Later, however, the Sumy Regional Military Administration reported that the death toll had risen to nine.

Police officer Ihor Poladych killed
During a subsequent airstrike in Sumy, while police officers were already on the scene, Colonel Ihor Poladych, head of the personnel support sector at the Sumy District Police Department of the National Police, was fatally wounded.
The press service noted, “Ihor dedicated more than 20 years of his life to serving in the police. Throughout the full-scale invasion of Ukraine by Russian forces, he carried out his professional duties until his last breath. He was just 43 years old. His wife is now without a husband, his son and daughter without a father, and his mother without a son.”
