Former US ambassador names mechanism to bring Putin to justice
One of the methods that will help bring the Russian president to justice is to adopt resolution of the UN General Assembly
Former US Ambassador to Ukraine (2006-2009) William Taylor said this, Ukrinform reports.
According to him, one option is to adopt a resolution of the UN General Assembly - this document should be developed together with the Ukrainian government and the international tribunal.
“The second option is smaller groups of countries, such as European countries, that could create an international tribunal. The US proposed a hybrid option, which Ukrainians and others did not like. But it is based on the idea of internationalizing a national court. That is, it could be a Ukrainian court with international support,” he said.
The third option, Taylor said, is to consider a lawsuit against Putin in one of the national courts of third countries, for example, European courts, which have jurisdiction over the crime of aggression.
In addition, the diplomat also spoke about the prospects for the NATO summit, which will soon take place in Vilnius.
“The promise made to Ukraine in 2008 can be realized now... Last week, Minister Reznikov asked our small group of American experts about NATO's open door policy. He said: 'Where are these doors, we don't see them.' In Vilnius, we should see it. I think so,” Taylor said.
