EU makes deal with Hungary for Orban to unfreeze €18 billion for Ukraine

EU softens its position on penalties against Hungary to unblock 18 billion euros of aid to Ukraine

This was reported by the Politico.

The European Union planned to freeze the 7.5 billion euros provided for Hungary in the EU budget because the country has departed from the principles of democracy. In protest, Hungary blocked 18 billion euros of aid to Ukraine.

After that, the number of penalties for Hungary was reduced to 6.3 billion euros in exchange for Budapest's veto.

The European Union also agreed on a plan for Hungary to spend money on recovery from the pandemic. This is another 5.8 billion euros in grants, which were delayed for a year and a half by problems with democracy in Hungary. To receive this money, the government of Viktor Orbán will have to fulfill many legislative conditions designed to strengthen the rule of law.
