Estonia has recognized the actions of the Russian Federation in Ukraine as genocide of the Ukrainian people
The Estonian Parliament (Riigikogu) was the first in the world after the Verkhovna Rada to adopt a resolution recognizing the actions of the Russian Federation in Ukraine as genocide against the Ukrainian nation
This is stated in the message of the Estonian Parliament.
At today's supplementary session of the Riigikogu, the deputies heard a speech by the head of the Ukrainian parliamentary delegation Olena Shulyak and unanimously adopted a statement on war crimes and the Russian genocide in Ukraine.
"Mass war crimes were committed by the Russian armed forces against the Ukrainian people. These crimes are ideologically committed by the political and military leadership of Russia, as well as state propaganda agencies. They consist of murders, abductions, deportation, imprisonment, torture, rape, as well as desecration of corpses", the message of the Riigikogu says.
The Riigikogu also calls for supporting the investigation of Russian crimes and the prosecution of the perpetrators, and for this, the creation of an international court in cooperation with states.
Estonians note that the recognition of Russia's actions as genocide against the Ukrainian people is important not only for the memory of tens of thousands of victims, but also for further actions in international courts to bring those responsible for the crimes committed.
Member of the Estonian Parliament, the author of the resolution Urmas Reinsalu emphasized that this resolution is a "moral duty" of all who respect the law.
"Firstly, the victims need justice. Secondly, after the genocide in Uganda and Serebnitsa, the UN General Assembly adopted a resolution that there is a responsibility to protect all countries of the world in preventing genocide. This is a moral duty", said Urmas Reinsalu.
Iryna Gerashchenko, MP from European Solidarity, who was also part of the delegation of Ukrainian parliamentarians, said that this resolution brought one step closer to the inevitable prosecution of the mastermind of all the atrocities committed by the Russian army in Ukraine - President Vladimir Putin.
"This resolution was prepared by 84 MPs of the Estonian Parliament and 86 MPs voted in favor. None voted against and none abstained. It is a great honor for our VR delegation to be present at this vote, because the Estonian Parliament became the first parliament in the world, who, after the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine, recognized the actions of the Russian occupying army in Ukraine as genocide, and it is precisely this qualification that will allow in due time to bring to justice all the executers of Ukrainians, all criminals, rapists, and the mastermind of this war - Putin, to criminal liability in international criminal courts", said Gerashchenko.
