On April 25, in the evening, Erdoğan gave an interview in a joint live broadcast by Ulke TV and Channel 7. Shortly after the interview began, when the host asked the Turkish president about the reshuffle in the Turkish government, the show was interrupted and the camera showed a journalist jumping out of his chair and shouting, “Commercial!”
After a pause that lasted more than 10 minutes, Erdoğan returned to the air, apologized to the audience and explained his condition with a ‘flu’.
“Yesterday and today we had intense campaigning. That's why I caught a cold. I even thought about canceling the program. But we promised and came. I wish you and our viewers good health,” Erdoğan said.
Later, Erdoğan tweeted that he would not participate in the events planned for April 26 in Kırıkkale, Yozgat and Sivas.
“Today I will rest at home on the advice of doctors. Unfortunately, we will not be able to meet with my brothers from Kırıkkale, Yozgat and Sivas. Vice President Fuat Oktay will take part in the events there,” Erdogan wrote.
He added that he plans to resume his campaign tour on April 27 but then he cancelled his scheduled events on Thursday, too,
Some suggested that Erdogan was critically ill in hospital having suffered a myocardial infarction. However, Erdogan's head of communications Fahrettin Altun took to social media to "categorically reject such baseless claims" about the president's health.
Health minister Fahrettin Koca said on Thursday that the president's health was fine and that he had "infectious gastroenteritis". He said he would resume his scheduled daily programmes as soon as possible.
Parliamentary and presidential elections in Turkey are scheduled for May 14.
On March 21, Recep Tayyip Erdoğan officially nominated his candidacy for the Turkish presidential election.
