Ukrainian forces destroy 9 Russian tanks and 440 soldiers per day — General Staff

Over the past day, 35 combat engagements took place in the frontline. Ukrainian defense forces repelled Russian attacks in six directions and eliminated 440 Russian soldiers

The total Russian combat losses from February 24, 2022, to January 8, 2024, amounted to:

  • personnel – about 365,170 (+440)
  • tanks ‒ 6,031 (+9)
  • armored fighting vehicles ‒ 11.194 (+14)
  • artillery systems – 8,666 (+13)
  • MLRS – 953 (+2)
  • air defense systems ‒ 638 (+1)
  • aircraft – 329
  • helicopters – 324
  • UAV operational-tactical level – 6,822 (+11) 
  • cruise missiles ‒ 1,787 (+1)
  • warships/boats ‒ 23
  • submarines – 1
  • vehicles and tank trucks – 11,542 (+19) 
  • special equipment ‒ 1,328 (+1)

Russia strikes Ukraine

In total, the Russian forces launched 11 missile strikes, 69 air strikes, fired 53 times from multiple launch rocket systems at Ukrainian troops' positions and populated areas. Unfortunately, Russian attacks have killed and injured civilians, destroyed and damaged residential private and apartment buildings, as well as other civilian infrastructure.

At night, the Russian troops attacked Ukraine once again, using 8 Shahed-136/131 attack UAVs. All Russian drones were downed.

3 settlements in Kharkiv region; Serebryanske forestry in Luhansk region; 9 settlements in Donetsk region; 4 settlements in Kherson region were hit by air strikes.

About 100 settlements in Chernihiv, Sumy, Kharkiv, Luhansk, Donetsk, Zaporizhzhia, Dnipro, Kherson and Mykolaiv regions came under artillery fire.

Situation in key sectors: 35 combat engagements took place over the last day

Near the state Ukrainian border with Belarus, the operational situation has not changed.

In the northeastern border area, the Russian army maintains a military presence, conducts active sabotage activities to prevent the deployment of Ukrainian troops to threatened areas, and increases the density of minefields along the state border in the Belgorod region.

In the Kupyansk direction, Ukrainian defenders beat back 2 Russian attacks near the settlements of Synkivka and Ivanivka in the Kharkiv region.

In the Lyman direction, Ukrainian defenders repulsed 4 Russian troops' attacks east of Terny, Donetsk region.

In the Bakhmut direction, Ukrainian soldiers repelled 3 Russian-backed attacks near Klishchiivka and Andriivka in the Donetsk region.

In the Avdiivka direction, Ukrainian defenders continue to deter the invading Russian troops, who are trying to encircle Avdiivka. Ukrainian soldiers are steadfastly holding the line, inflicting significant losses on the invaders. Thus, the Defense Forces beat back 6 Russian attacks near Novobakhmutivka and Avdiivka and another 15 attacks near Pervomaiske and Nevelske in Donetsk region over the past day.

In the Marinka direction, Ukrainian Defense Forces continue to hold back the Russian forces in the areas of Marinka and Novomykhailivka in the Donetsk region. Ukrainian servicemen repelled three attacks.

In the Shakhtarsk direction, the Russian army did not conduct offensive (assault) actions.

In the Zaporizhzhia direction, Ukrainian Defense Forces fended off a Russian attack west of Verbove in Zaporizhzhia region.

In the Kherson direction, the Ukrainian Defense Forces are expanding the bridgehead. Despite significant losses, Russian troops do not give up trying to drive Ukrainian units from their positions. Over the past day, Russia carried out 18 unsuccessful assault operations.

Ukrainian Defense Forces strikes at Russian troops' positions

The Ukrainian Armed Forces are inflicting losses in manpower and equipment on the Russian forces, depleting the enemy along the entire front line.

Over the past day, Ukrainian aviation struck 4 areas of Russian troops' concentration. Ukrainian air defense forces also downed a Kh-59 guided missile.

Ukrainian missile troops destroyed a control center, 2 ammunition depots and 2 Russian artillery pieces.

  • Over the past day, the Russian forces launched 6 missiles, 40 air strikes, fired 21 times at Ukrainian troops' positions and localities from multiple launch rocket systems.
