Do Ukraine hold strong position on possible outcomes of Saudi Arabia talks?

Radio Liberty editor Rostyslav Khotyn speculated on the possible agreements that could be reached in Saudi Arabia during negotiations on the Russia-Ukraine war

He shared his thoughts on Espreso TV.

"The expectation is that there could be some outlines for a future ceasefire. It's obvious that there won't be any final agreements, but the parties will reaffirm their positions. Ukraine, in particular, will confirm its willingness to agree to a 30-day ceasefire, which was already agreed by the Ukrainian delegation in Jeddah earlier. However, it will be a total ceasefire, not just in the air and at sea, as Kyiv initially insisted, but later accepted the US proposal for a complete and total ceasefire. Russia will likely reaffirm what Putin promised Trump during their phone conversation, regarding the energy ceasefire, to stop the attacks on the energy infrastructure. This is a favorable situation for Ukraine. Why? Because it really hurts the Russian oil industry, which supports the Russian military machine. Oil refineries, oil depots, and secondly, Ukraine has already passed the heating season. The difficult winter is over, so these attacks on Ukraine's energy infrastructure aren't as damaging as they were in December, January, or February," he said.

Hotin also believes that the United States will push for a ceasefire in the Black Sea: "This is another thing that will be discussed. It's beneficial for Ukraine because it needs to secure the maritime transport routes for Black Sea exports. This is very beneficial. And Ukraine has strong positions there as well, since, as I remind you, Ukrainian maritime drones and missiles have destroyed almost a third of the Russian Black Sea fleet. So Ukraine is not in a weak position there, as it may seem."

"Obviously, the Americans are trying to gauge, and to some extent, trying to get both Russia and Ukraine to agree to a complete ceasefire. Clearly, there are such ambitions, at least in the White House, they see that this should happen in maybe just under a month, in a couple of weeks, around Easter. And it falls on the middle of April (April 20). By the way, there is also a symbolic aspect, as this year, Easter coincides on both the Western and Eastern calendars. Christians of both Eastern and Western rites will celebrate Easter on the same day this year. So, the Americans wanted to use the symbolism of this date," said Khotyn.

  • On March 22, The Washington Post reported that negotiations between the Ukrainian and Russian delegations regarding a ceasefire would take place in Saudi Arabia. These talks will not be direct, meaning the Ukrainian delegation will not meet with the Russian one.
