As the Ukrainian President's Office reports, Zelenskyy welcomed the placement of IAEA inspectors at Ukrainian nuclear power plants and expressed the hope that such missions would prevent further shelling of nuclear power plants by the Russian Federation.
“I know that our teams are working on strengthening the safety of the nuclear infrastructure. Thank you for the positive decision to place inspectors at our nuclear power plants. This is very important,” he said.
During the meeting, they also discussed the situation at the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant (ZNPP), which is still under temporary Russian occupation. The President of Ukraine noted the need for the presence of IAEA inspectors at the ZNPP and emphasized that the Ukrainian side is doing everything to guarantee their safety.
Separately, Volodymyr Zelenskyy emphasized the importance of demilitarizing the station and removing all representatives of Russia from it without exception. He noted that Ukraine continues discussing this issue exclusively with the IAEA.
During the meeting, it was agreed to continue cooperation between Kyiv and the IAEA in order to further strengthen nuclear security in Ukraine amid ongoing hostilities.
On Twitter, after the meeting, Rafael Grossi noted that he confirmed to Zelenskyy the creation of support and assistance missions at all Ukrainian nuclear power plants.
“We also continued our discussions on the Zaporizhzhia safety and security protection zone. Work continues. The zone is essential to prevent a nuclear accident,” he tweeted.
