Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Ukraine to the United States (2015-2019), diplomat Valeriy Chaly shared his opinion on negotiations with Russia in different situations. In particular, he said that direct negotiations would be very dangerous for Ukraine

He spoke about this on Espreso TV.

In his opinion, three types of negotiations with Russia are possible. The first is negotiations during the war on the exchange of prisoners, which have now stalled: "For this we need the level of the president, it is clear that it is no longer possible to negotiate with Putin."

As for the second type of negotiations with Russia on the results of the war, Chaly hopes that they will not take place.

"If they do, then forget about reparations, compensation from Russia, forget about The Hague, at least until the Russians themselves surrender their own. This scenario is very bad for Ukraine - direct negotiations with Russia. There may be decisions of a specially created international structure that will discuss its verdict with both Ukraine and Russia, but I do not see a formal peace signed by Ukraine and Russia in the coming years," the diplomat said.

Chaly believes that the Armed Forces can achieve significant results on the battlefield next year. At the same time, prolonging the war will turn it into an ATO, so shelling of the border will continue even after de-occupation.

"The Russians will continue shelling as long as such a regime remains there, because Putin's group is in charge and does not recognize the right to existence of the Ukrainian people and state. This war will continue until the situation changes dramatically. And that's when the third negotiations will take place: necessarily on Russian payments, surrender, and this will happen either with the collapse of the Russian Federation, which I don't know if it will happen in the coming periods, although they say it is possible; or with a change of government, when there will be a new regime. God forbid we go for all these formal signings with Putin next year. So I think our government is absolutely aware of this," he added.

  • Earlier, Austrian Foreign Minister Alexander Schallenberg said that peace in Ukraine can only be achieved through negotiations with the aggressor country.
