Ukrainian navy chief: No fortress is unbreakable, including Crimea Bridge
Commander of the Ukrainian Navy Oleksiy Neizhpapa stated that the Kerch Bridge remains a target for Ukrainian forces
He said this in an interview with the Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty project Crimea.Realities.
"Of course, the bridge is a difficult target, especially now. But in life, there’s no fortress that can’t be destroyed. There are no borders that can’t be crossed. The bridge is the same. It's just another target, like the rest," Neizhpapa commented.
In his opinion, informational silence is necessary during wartime.
"Always, if you want to be successful. If we say that tomorrow we'll strike the Crimean Bridge, then the enemy will probably learn about it through television. Or if we say we won’t strike it — well, that's just wrong," emphasized the Navy Commander.
He also noted that strikes on Crimea have not decreased, though perhaps their intensity has.
"I haven’t analyzed whether they’ve increased or decreased. Everything is operating in a standard mode, as on other fronts. So there are targets in Crimea and in other regions where the enemy is located, of course. That’s why I can’t provide you with that kind of analysis... Targets are being hit. Maybe not all of them are reported in the press, obviously. Perhaps the intensity isn’t as high. Maybe that’s due to the importance of other fronts," Neizhpapa remarked.
Strikes on Kerch Bridge
On October 8, 2022, the occupation authorities reported an attack on the Crimea Bridge in Kerch, which caused a fire.
On May 27, the head of the Security Service of Ukraine (SBU), Vasyl Maliuk, said that the Ukrainian Armed Forces had taken "certain measures" at that time, though he did not share specific details.
On the morning of July 17, 2023, explosions were again heard over the Crimea Bridge. The occupation authorities reported an “emergency situation” and damage to the roadway on the spans, as well as two fatalities.
The SBU stated that all details regarding the explosion on the Crimea Bridge would be disclosed after Ukraine's victory in the war against Russia.
Only at the end of July 2023 did the SBU officially confirm that it was responsible for the attack on the Crimea Bridge.
In August 2024, Ukrainian forces attacked the Crimea Bridge again. However, the strike resulted in holes that the Russians were able to repair.
